POPULAR QUESTIONS ASKED BY VEHICLE OWNERS

Here's some quick answers to some popular and important questions that perhaps you have wondered yourself!

How often should I change my oil?

With the advancement of oil chemistry and innovations in engine design, the recommended interval between oil changes is now longer for newer vehicles. Under normal driving conditions when using synthetic oil, you should require an oil change every 7,000 to 10,000 KM's. Many newer vehicles have a built in oil life monitor located in the driver information centre (located on your dash).  This monitors your oil life for you by showing the percentage of oil life you have left.  Once this drops below 12%, you should consider scheduling a service appointment.

Of course it is always best practice to check your owner's manual or consult your service team for the best recommendations for your vehicle and driving habits.

What’s the difference between diesel and gas engines?

Both gas and diesel engines are internal combustion. The key difference between gas and diesel engines lies in the ignition process.  For a gas powered engine, a spark plug is needed to ignite the fuel.  Whereas, with a diesel powered engine a spark plug isn't necessary because diesel fuel has a higher compression ratio than gas, meaning it compresses the air drawn into an engine's cylinders with such extreme force that it spontaneously ignites.

What does it mean when my turn signal is blinking faster than usual?

The most common reason for a turn signal to blink faster typically means one of the bulbs in your lights has burned out and needs replaced.  If you notice this happening, you should have it fixed as soon as possible. It's important to have all lighting features working properly on your vehicle to ensure the safety of yourself and those on the road around you.

What is the correct tire pressure for my vehicle?

Tire pressure recommendations can vary depending on vehicle.  Recommended pressures are printed on a vehicle's tire information label, typically located on the edge of the driver's door, but can also be located on the fuel door or glove box. Alternatively, you will find tire pressure recommendations in your owner's manual.

When should I check my tire pressure?

Having too much or too little air in your tires can impact the wear and tear on your vehicle and can also effect fuel efficiency. It is best to check your tire pressure at least once a month, don't forget to check your spare tire while you're at it! To get the most accurate reading on tire pressure you should check your tires when they are cold. Many newer vehicles have a tire pressure sensors that will give you a live reading of your tire pressure.  It will also alert you if the pressure drops too low.

Always be sure to check your tire pressure before heading on a longer trip to avoid any unnecessary surprises on your travels!

What does it mean if I hear squeaking when I'm braking?

Sometimes it's as simple as wet brakes/pads.  If it rained the night before, brakes can be wet when you go to drive your vehicle and this can cause squeaking.  However, if the squeaking persists this could be a sign that your brake pads are wearing out and need replaced.  Always best to consult with your service team to ensure your vehicle is operating safely.

Do I need to service my vehicle at the dealership to qualify for my warranty?

No you do not, however, we know your GM vehicle best and we may uncover a potential problem that you are not aware of during yoru visit.  With the vehicle already here, we can quickly address the concern, bill the manufacturer and get your vehicle back on the road fast.  Remember, if you choose to service your vehicle thru an aftermarket garage, make sure you keep your receipts for future warranty purposes.

Do I need to have my transmission fluid changed?

For optimal vehicle health and longevity all transmission fluid should be changed at some point. Transmissions are designed to operate at high temperatures, however continual overheating can cause the fluid to break down faster.  Those who do most of their driving in the city will likely need to change their transmission fluid sooner than those who do mostly highway driving.

An average estimate for automatic transmissions is every 50,000 to 100,000 KM's.  The fluid for manual transmissions will need changed sooner, every 35,000 to 70,000 KM's.  For the recommendation best suited for your vehicle, you should refer to your owner's manual.

What should I have checked regularly on my vehicle?

It Is best practice to have all your fluid levels checked regularly.  These include, brake fluid, power steering, transmission, and windshield washer fluid.  All these fluids play an integral role in the safety and performance of your vehicle.  A vehicle Health checked performed by OMS will inspect these levels for you and ensure they are topped up.

How often should I change my Cabin Air Filter?

To maintain optimum air quality within your vehicle, it’s recommended that you change your cabin air filter every year.  Over time, as airborne particles are caught in your cabin air filter, they can begin to clog the filter which can reduce the efficiency of the system. This can cause a reduction in air quality within your vehicle and can also provide more strain on the blower motor as it works harder to pull air through the clogged filter.
